New Lady Gaga Interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show
Lady Gaga made a guest appearance on The Ellen Show November 27, 2009. This was her second appearance on the show since her career began only a couple of years ago. Lady Gaga’s career has skyrocketed since her last visit with Ellen DeGeneres, when she performed her international number one hit, Just Dance, back in December of 2008.
Right before Lady Gaga came out, Ellen DeGeneres introduced her with “Rolling Stone calls her the most defining pop star of 2009.” Lady Gaga came on stage wearing an almost see-through, thick plastic dress. Ellen DeGeneres started off telling Lady Gaga just how original she is. “There’s no one like you, I mean, it’s like you’re not just a great singer, you’re a show.” Discussing just how important it is for a singer to actually be able to sing. Lady Gaga said, “I always think that’s funny when I meet people, and they’re like, oh, my god, it’s amazing, you sing.”
Ellen DeGeneres quickly turned the conversation to fashion with Lady Gaga running down a list of her costume and hat designers. To date, Lady Gaga’s bizarre taste in fashion and far-out costumes has made her a mega-watt super star. It is one of the things she is known for. She continues to turn up at award shows and performances wearing elaborate head gear, sometimes covering her entire face. One costume that has been dubbed the Kermit The Frog outfit was made by designer Jean de Castelbajac, and looks like a bunch of Kermit The Frog puppets glued together to make a top. Lady Gaga told Ellen DeGeneres, “I really loved that one in particular because I thought it was a commentary on not wearing fur, ’cause I hate fur and I don’t wear fur.”
When Ellen DeGeneres asked Lady Gaga why all the elaborate costumes? Lady Gaga responded with, “Well, I’ll say, the whole point of what I do, the monster ball, the music, the performance, I want to create a space for my fans where they can feel free and they can celebrate, because I didn’t fit in in high school, and I felt like a freak. So I like to create this atmosphere for my fans where they feel like they have a freak in me to hang out with, and they don’t feel alone.” Ellen replied, “So it really isn’t for someone to talk about you. It’s not for that. It really is to create a space for people. Lady Gaga answered, “Well, this is really who I am, and it took a long time to be ok with that.”
Lady Gaga seemed very relaxed and at home with Ellen DeGeneres, opening up to give us a look into her personal life this year. For most of 2009 she’s been on a bus touring around dispensing her youthful pearls of wisdom to sold-out stadiums of her fans. While on the road recently, she received bad news from back home in New York City. Her father was not doing well, and Ellen DeGeneres asked about him. “And how’s your dad?” Lady Gaga replied, “He’s doing better, yeah. I’m actually going to play a song for him later at the end of the show.” Lady Gaga’s father had to undergo open heart surgery recently. Lady Gaga went on to tell Ellen DeGeneres, “He had an aortic valve transplant, and I was on the road, and I was having a lot of trouble missing my parents and wanting to be with my dad, so I wrote the song Speechless for him to sort of beg him to get the surgery, and it worked.”
Later on towards the end of the interview, Ellen DeGeneres asked Lady Gaga, “What’s the best Christmas gift you have ever received or can imagine receiving?” Lady Gaga answered with, “My father bought me a four-track recorder when I was about 11 years old, and it was this really, really simple mechanism that I could just sit at the piano and hook up the mic and record by myself. That’s probably the best gift that my dad ever gave me. And look what that led to.” Ellen DeGeneres replied, “That was a smart investment.” Considering that her first album, The Fame, has sold more than 20 million digital copies, Lady Gaga’s father made the investment of a lifetime when he bought that recorder for his daughter. Wouldn’t you agree?
Lady Gaga was born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta on March 28, 1986. At the ripe old age of 23, she has already made the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, a crown only ultra successful singers get to wear. Lady Gaga is a self proclaimed bi-sexual woman, but does not want to use that as a way to get gay fans to buy tickets to her concerts or listen to her music. In October 2009 Saturday Night Live ran a comedy skit featuring Lady Gaga and Madonna. Lady Gaga often admits in interviews that Madonna is one of a few idols who inspired her while she was growing up. In a Rolling Stones story last year Madonna talked about Lady Gaga’s budding new career, saying “I see a lot of me in her.” Well Madonna, we do to!
The future is bright for the self proclaimed freak, Lady Gaga. She is currently doing interviews and performing her Monster Ball concerts all over the US. You can see her in concert in the US through the end of January 2010. Lady Gaga will begin her world tour in Manchester, GBR in February 2010.
