Director Roland Emmerich has done it again – only better. Director Roland Emmerich’s previous direction credits include 10,000 BC (2008); The Day After Tomorrow (2004); The Patriot (2000); Godzilla (1998); Independence Day (1996); Universal Soldier (1992). In my opinion, 2012 is the cherry on this director’s parfait of blockbuster movies.
Earth has an expiration date – at least according to the ancient Mayan civilization it does. According to that famous calendar, the earth will come to an end on December 21, 2012. Why would anyone pay any attention to the Mayan calendar? Perhaps because the Mayans created a phenomenally accurate way of keeping time – one that rivals and even surpasses our current methods. Or perhaps it is because the Mayan calendar is able to predict eclipses thousands of years in the future – something we’ve only just recently learned to do.
2012 is a real special effects extravaganza. It has definitely raised the bar for movie makers using CGI in their films – something that will no doubt benefit millions of movie goers like me – and you! The special effects in 2012 are not only grandiose and spectacular, they are exceptionally detailed. Look closely during the movie and notice all of the tiny details included in the scenes.
In 2012, a couple of scientists discover that an unusually large discharge of solar neutrinos is having a unique effect on earth. The rays, as they pass through earth, are acting like microwaves – thus superheating the core of the earth. Heat equals pressure and that pressure has to escape to someplace. That pressure escapes through the earth’s crust, but not until it shifts continents and causes countless cataclysmic earthquakes and tsunamis.
The government knows about the pending disaster, and they also know there’s nothing they can do to prevent it – so they secretly build gigantic arks. The wealthy purchase tickets on the arks, and others are selected because of their skills or genetics. The plan is to save 700,000 people on these mammoth, submarine-like arks, but some of them are destroyed prior to launch.
Woody Harrelson deserves special kudos for creating the most memorable character in 2012. He plays a semi-nutjob who makes broadcasts from his RV on fringe topics. Nobody does semi-crazy quite as well as Harrelson does. Remember his character in Wag the Dog? How about Natural Born Killers?
2012 is a true must-see movie. I intend to add it to my DVD collection as soon as it’s available. It’s the new standard for effects-driven movies, and a great 2½ hours of entertainment.
