FULL REVIEW of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs

As my rating suggests, I enjoyed Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, but not enough to recommend forking over big bucks for a theater ticket to see it. It was nice, lighthearted entertainment suitable for both children and adults. I’d have to classify this animated movie as a comedy/fantasy – not vice-versa.

In Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Flint Lockwood is an inventor. His inventions are largely impractical and as such never catch on. Add to this the fact that his inventions are frequently the cause of havoc in the small town where he lives, and it’s easy to see why nobody likes Flint. But one day Flint invents a machine that will make food – any kind of food at all – using water as the only ingredient. Flint’s washing machine-sized invention gets accidentally launched into the clouds. After that, it rains everything from fully prepared hamburgers to steak.

The greedy mayor of Flint’s hometown in Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs paves the way for abusing Flint’s machine, and thus causes it to break. Once broken, the machine starts creating and raining down gigantic foods. Now Flint must stop the machine and save the town from destruction by candy corn and marshmallows.

Phil Lord & Chris Miller, the co-directors of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, are fairly new to directing. But the pair is not new to working with animation in other capacities including as producers and voice talent. The duo’s experiences served them well. They concocted a very enjoyable animated movie.

I’m going to have to say that I think Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs is aimed more at adults than children – despite the fact that the ‘morals of the story’ seem more for the younger crowd. The best dialog in the movie – and the most humorous – is between Flint (Bill Hader) and Sam Sparks (Anna Faris). The nuances of reactions, tone and under-the-breath comments make these two animated characters really come to life. Kudos to all!

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs is a fine movie for the family. It will entertain the adults and the children as well. The parents will enjoy the dialog, and the kids will enjoy watching as giant jellybeans (among other things) rain down from the sky.
