FULL REVIEW of The Canyon
There are three things that save The Canyon from being a total disaster. 1) Will Patton. The scenery at the Grand Canyon is always stunning. 3) A surprise ending. And unfortunately, Will Patton is killed off about half way through the movie. NB: I don’t think that’s a spoiler – you have to know he needs to die for the movie to unfold.
The Canyon begins with our newlyweds, played by Yvonne Strahovski and Eion Bailey, heading to their honeymoon spot: the Grand Canyon. The couple intends to take a riding tour of the canyon. It’s one of those tours where everyone is put onto a horse or mule and then they descend into the canyon and spend a few days sightseeing and camping. But the couple didn’t know to get the necessary permits, so they can’t enjoy the honeymoon they’ve been looking forward to. But wait! Then they meet Will Patton, “guide extraordinaire.” Patton says he can get the permits and take them on the best tour of the canyon ever. They depart and head for a ’secret’ place that only Patton knows about. Patton is killed and the couple must cope with escaping the elements and the rigorous terrain of the Grand Canyon – and wolves.
Will Patton’s character is a real joy – and a lifesaver for The Canyon. Even though it’s clear that Patton is on the shady side of the ethical tracks, you can’t help but love him. He’s a crusty old whiskey drinking guy who has ‘done it all,’ and isn’t afraid to tell you about it. He’s a skilled outdoorsman, survivalist and knows everything there is to know about the Grand Canyon.
Yvonne Strahovski and Eion Bailey do an okay job with their roles. You may remember Yvonne from the TV series Chuck. Eion Bailey has been in lots of things, but not so that I could reference him for you. When you see him – and his unusually bright blue eyes – you may recognize him. The director, Richard Harrah, is pretty new to the game of movie making – especially directing.
There are so many things that happen in The Canyon that are unbelievable that it strongly detracts from an already weak movie. Take for example when Yvonne Strahovski tries to use her cell phone while climbing a steep rock face. Or when the couple allows the one mule they were able to retrieve to escape – again! Or when the 200 pound wolf gets a hold of Yvonne Strahovski’s leg and only leaves a few scratches. You’ll see what I mean – if you dare to watch this disappointing flick.
As I said – there is a surprise ending to The Canyon. I’m not saying it’s a good surprise ending, but it is indeed a surprise.
