Movie review of 9 (2009)
DAMIEN’S RATING of 9: 7 – This was a good movie. I do not think it’s worth the price of a theatre ticket, though. Wait for the DVD.

FULL REVIEW of 9
9 takes place on a post-apocalyptic earth. Essentially, a scientist had the foresight to create nine small robots before the demise of humankind. Each of the robots has different skills and a unique personality. Unknown to the robots, the scientist left himself (his soul) in the robots, but did not tell them how to get him back out. That’s about all I can say about plot without ruining the movie for you.
I refer to the tiny mechanical creatures in 9 as robots. But that’s not really very accurate. Each robot is unique in appearance and demeanor and none of them really seem to be mechanical. They move more like biological entities than mechanical ones. In fact, they are all made up from various scraps of this and that. They are quite creatively conceived and elegantly illustrated and animated.
9 is not a happy movie. It starts with the fact that all humans are dead – as a result of our own failings. The earth is a mess, and even though there are no more people, there are remnants of things that are dangerous and undesirable. The movie also uses surrealistic coloration to add to the less than cheery tenor of the movie.
I would not watch or recommend this movie for its story. This movie is good because of the CGI, the creativity, the dialog and the voices. I know 9 carries some serious messages, but I just want to be entertained. I rated this movie as a CGI scifi flick – not as a documentary, per se.
At just over an hour long, 9 is a relatively short movie. The fact that 9 is short, however, does not detract from the movie. The writers and director, with the able support of a superb cast of voices, were able to tell their entire story in that length of time. I’m glad they didn’t try to make the movie longer by adding fluff and/or bad special effects.
